What are the procedures to bring a website out of Google penalty?
Google penalty on any website may cause a lot of loss to it. Its ranking may decrease, the organic traffic may be reduced substantially, or even Google stops it from getting ranked in a search result altogether. This drop in traffic is revenue losses or the website becoming less profitable than before.
Due to certain manipulative malpractices which violate Google’s guidelines and recommendations, a website may be penalized. Also, sometimes, even after following Google guidelines a website may be penalized. Some penalties may be caused by externalities not under our control, for instance, Negative SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
Here, Negative SEO means the use of unethical and black-hat techniques to sabotage a competitor’s ranking on a search engine. Regardless of what factors caused a website to be penalized, one has to take the website out of Google penalty.
Identify the type of penalty.
First determine which kind of penalty has affected the website. A fall in traffic doesn’t always imply that the website was penalised. It may be caused by technical issues such as server problem, robots.txt blocking access to Google’s crawler, improper redirects etc.
A traffic drop may also be experienced if the website’s visitor numbers depend on the time of the year or month. For instance, a website selling woollen garments may find a huge drop in traffic during summer months.
Other things which indicate penalty on a website are dropping of traffic on individual pages and/or specific keywords, significant drop in overall traffic, a number of pages getting de-indexed or an entire site getting de-indexed by Google, among others.
Penalties are mainly of two types: A. Manual Penalty and B. Algorithmic Penalty. Manual penalties are caused by Google’s manual quality raters. Algorithmic penalties are caused due to detections by Google’s algorithm to detect spam and other violations.
To check for a Manual Penalty one has to log into Google Search Console (GSC). One can see a message if the website has been penalized. In the Main Account dashboard’s “All Messages” or click on “Messages” on the side menu for any individual site. Also, as an alternate one could look in “Search Traffic->Manual Action” section of the menu.
Manual penalties may be of many types; some may cover the entire site and some may be specific to certain pages. Older manual penalties might have expired as different manual penalties expire over different time periods. However, expired penalties don’t mean that they may not be levied again and hence they must be resolved.
If all is fine, then the message “No Manual Webspam actions found” is seen.
If the site’s search engine health is continuously monitored it would be easier to figure out which algorithm has affected it. This is good for detecting current or new algorithms which have hit the site.
Even a penalty which occurred in the past they can be figured out with the help of GSC and/or Google Analytics (GA). For traffic issues, GA is helpful and for indexing issues GSC is used. For traffic issues, in the GA select a wide date range in Audience Overview panel. From the ensuing graph, one could obviously see the date on which the website was hit by a penalty.
For indexing issue, in GSC, go to “Google Index->Index status” to notice the rough date range when the drop began. To determine which algorithm caused the penalty, one can use Penguin Tool of Google. It will then line up a graph of the website’s traffic with lines that indicate the points in time when the algorithms were run.
Once, it has been determined whether the penalty was manual or algorithmic, the next step should be to understand why the penalty was imposed. This way one would be able to identify which violation needs to be fixed.
Understanding the penalty
A lot of penalty types are there. Some common penalties are being discussed here. (The next three are manual penalties)
People may also create ‘unnatural’ backlinks to bring down the rank of their competitor by making irrelevant links to the website. One could also get manual action for having “Unnatural links from your site”. This type of penalty may be for the whole website or may be limited to a few pages.
The major algorithms which penalize a website are (Although Google tries to keep algorithms as secret as possible)
Penguin is page specific; therefore, the traffic generating page (which might have used unnatural backlinks) gets hit and other pages may remain unaffected. It may also discount some unnatural links thereby making such links to now count nothing in determining rank.
Since, Penguin is a massive algorithm; it may take weeks to run it fully for a website. Hence if the drop in traffic is after a Penguin run had started, it could still be possible what might be penalizing the website.
Manual action as well Penguin might also both hit a website at the same time for unnatural links.
Other well known updates such as Pigeon, Payday, Mobilegeddon etc may also have an effect on a search engine traffic.
Identifying and fixing all relevant problems.
Once it has been identified that what has hit the website, it becomes easy to resolve it.
Issues such as unnatural links emanating from the website can be tackled by reducing such links especially the links of low authority sites. If the site has spam in the form of user generated content and comments, delete it and in future ensure that such spam does not accumulate on the website.
Now, the links which are unnatural needs to be figured out. If the website is small and not very popular, the number of links could be in 10s or in 100s, which could make it easy to flag ‘unnatural’ links. If the website is big, then there could be a few hundred or even thousands of backlinks to it.
In such a case, various tools (which are paid ones) could be used to flag unnatural links. Such tools use their own formulas to analyze the links. These tools have other features which help to easily identify penalties and make our email outreach better. (Email outreach will be explained shortly)
These tools may catch good or bad links but these are not 100% accurate. Hence they could be used to narrow down the best and worst links. Manual inspection becomes the option one has though it is cumbersome.
Some of the links could be easily spotted, for instance links which are contained in website which are poorly written or from a site which looks very generic. All such links could be marked down but even this exercise is subjective. Not all spurious links needs to be removed to come out of manual penalty, as this identification process cannot be perfect.
In order to remove the identified links, the owner has to be requested to remove such links which point to our website. For this, contact information, i.e. name and email address of each site owner is required (this is where the aforementioned email outreach makes our task easy).
This can be done via manually finding out detail for each link’s owner or use some other tool to do it. Once all the contacts (which may be hundreds or thousands in number) are collected, a proper email requesting the owner for links removal needs to be written. This may help removing a lot of unnatural links.
The other method is submitting a disavow file to Google. This file contains the list of domains which we are asking Google to ignore. Put one domain per line in the file. This step would be crucial in getting the penalty removed.
Duplicate content could be found out by using GSC. Go to “search appearance->HTML improvements” to find out issues, if any.
The most common things to try for removal of a Panda penalty are:
To remove low quality links, disavowal could be used (as discussed earlier). Although, most low quality links decay or lose value over a period. It would be better to invest time and resources to attract high quality links as this algorithm is based on some kind of ratio between low and high quality links.
For manual penalties, ask for reconsideration.
If one’s website is hit by a manual action, a review or reconsideration request could be submitted. This request must be put when one is satisfied that enough action has been taken to fix the problem and that it would not occur again.
Once the request is submitted to Google, a quality rater attends it. They would then revisit and re-evalute the website. Upon their satisfaction, the manual action would be lifted.
To do such a request, in the GSC visit manual action under “Search Traffic->Manual Actions”. For each manual action which struck our site, one can click the “request a review” to bring a up a form. In this form, fill in the form with adequate explanation of the action taken along with some documentation as a proof that the action was actually taken.
Give all the possible explanation to what cause that issue in the first place. Even try to tell stepwise that how the issue got fixed (this is where to present the documentation). Finally tell Google that what steps would be taken to avoid such manual penalties in the future.
Avoid getting penalized again, in the future.
To avoid getting penalized again and reduce such chances, some steps could be taken

You might have come across an orange button on the very right-hand side of any web page or blog on the internet. When you click on it you come across a page wherein all posts are saved. Some might think it’s a kind of database or something but actually, it isn’t. To know about RSS and why it is important, keep reading this article till the end.
RSS stands for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication and basically, it’s a software that allows your readers to read your content without going to the particular blog. Technically RSS is a structured XML document that includes full or summarized text along with other metadata such as published date, author name, etc.
Suppose if you are following 5-6 blogs and you have subscribed to the RSS feed so you can easily read those articles from RSS feed reader. It saves your time as you won’t have to go to their blog and find the latest article they post. So, RSS feed is very essential for blogs or any informative websites where they post kinds of stuff daily.
RSS is an open standard protocol that allows any website to provide a free subscription to its reader without signing up for their website or blog. By using RSS reader you can access all new updates from those websites without having to visit them individually.
WordPress owners get this feature on their site wherein it automatically publishes RSS feeds of your content. In short, RSS is a data format that allows the text of a blog or website to be transferred to such software without having to worry about the stuff like colors and font choices.
The more complex the internet content grew, so did the RSS files which quickly adopted images, videos and much more but in a short format for easier loading and compatibility across all feed readers. So here the internet users create their online feeds filled with custom updates form the sites they visit often.
RSS solves the problem of tech-savvy people. It allows you to stay easily informed by getting in the latest feed for you. It saves your time and ensures your privacy by not needing to join each site’s email newsletter and fetching you the real-time updates of your favorite blogs or websites. The number of sites offering RSS feed is growing rapidly.
RSS feed is also a good option for social media if you just want the news and articles without any other baggage. Also, they are easy to read and update automatically.
With the emergence of mobile apps, there are many feed readers available online which display RSS feeds from the websites that you subscribe to. Some of the popular feed readers are:
Before putting RSS Feeds on your site, take into account the following factors:
Although RSS feeds may not make any direct impact on your website’s ranking but you can still take advantage of its other benefits. If RSS feed is utilized correctly, it can help boost your site’s traffic and increase your reach to a wider audience.
The RSS Feeds are still present but now they are not as dominant as they used to be once. These days social media like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and others provide a go-to option for following sites, watching feeds or learning the latest content.
Other RSS solutions that you might be viewing are YouTube channels, weather updates, podcasts, etc. These all provide users with an option of “subscribe”. By clicking on the “Subscribe” button you become the subscriber of the site & get notified whenever they update a new piece of information.
Take online brands, for example, they post continuously in social media for marketing their products but they don’t want to take the extra time to convert content into a bunch of RSS files. That’s why a new blog or website may offer only “subscription” content by simply following them on social media but no RSS feed.
However, RSS feed still has its place with its loyal users.

Looking at the bigger picture, when you plan to expand your website, it becomes a task to prevent pages from duplicating. This can cause duplicity in content.
Suppose if you have two similar pages, and they both are eligible to rank for a certain keyword, the search engine gets into a dilemma which among the two URLs it should send traffic to or which page to rank. To tackle this, you can select a preferred URL, this is what we call the canonical URL.
Canonical URL can be found in the source of a webpage, by searching for rel=” canonical”
In short, it is a technical solution for duplicate content. A “rel=canonical” tag clarifies this and helps search engines understand the content, prevents them from ignoring the page and improves the chances of the content’s ranking.
There was once a talk that duplicate content would lead to a penalty, dropping a website’s entire ranking or removing it from SERP entirely but Google doesn’t punish websites with duplicate content, it filters out duplicate results to create a better user experience.
Your site’s URL is similar to the address of your home. You can easily find one’s home if you have the exact address. When someone has your company’s URL, they can find your website, or a specific page on the website when the URL appears on the top of your internet browser. For example, the URL for Amazon is “www.amazon.com”.
It gets more confusing here, as sometimes one page may have more than one URL. For example, a web page with the same amount of content may be registered as:
All of these pages are the same but the URLs are different. Therefore search engines may treat each separate URL as a separate page, even if all these pages have the same content. It gets more confusing if your website offers a customizable user experience.
That’s where Canonical URL comes to our rescue. You should specify to the search engine which URL is reliable. When you use canonical URLs, you let search engines and users know that the content on the two URLs is the same and which one is correct.
Canonical URL is important for the following reasons:
They help to specify which URL you want people to see in search results. Example you might prefer people reach your red satchel handbag product page via http://www.vistahandbags.com/handbags/redhandbag.html
They help in clarifying the tracking metrics for a single product. When there are a variety of URLs, it becomes more difficult to get consolidated metrics for a specific piece of content.
They help in unifying link signals for similar or duplicate pages and manage syndicated content. Canonical URLs help consolidate page ranking to your preferred URL. Similar or duplicate content across websites won’t have to compete for traffic or ranking in search engines.
Canonicals also help you lead to the search engine for the original article. Let’s say you’ve written a blog for another party that is published on their website. If you’d like to post it on your site too, you could agree on posting it with a canonical of the original version.
For specific cases, you can create custom canonicals URLs for pages or blog posts by using if statement, based on various templates in your theme. This is usually only required if you are doing some fancy URL concealing.
Your pages will be competing with each other on the same search engine. Having lots of pages with different URLs maybe would create a dilemma for search engines which one to rank on the first page.
On the pages you want your search engine to recognize as canonical, just simply add a link tag to the head of the HTML code.
For example, if you want to give the canonical tag to http://www.bluebells.com, the code would look like:
<link rel=” canonical”
Thus canonical tags are not that complicated as they seem. Just keep in mind that canonical tags are not a directive but a signal for search engines. Hence by properly employing canonical tags, you can thus improve your site ranking and overall performance of your website.

Now, what is Google PageRank?
The algorithm used by Google for positioning of a website on the Search Engine Result Page is known as PageRank. It was developed by the founders of Google, Larry Page & Sergey Brin. The significance of a website is evaluated by PageRank.
Whenever someone googles something online, the SERP shows them the most relevant high-quality content. This content is as per the user’s search terms. This page ranking algorithm is one of the over 200+ google factors when it comes to ranking web pages.
However, this is not the only considering factor when deciding page rank by Google there are other factors too but undisclosed by Google.
For a clear understanding of the importance of PageRank let’s take a small example. Suppose if you want to rent a car in Mumbai. So if you search for the car rentals on Google you will see the following page:
So, above you can see that Google displays paid advertisements at the top, then it will show up the organic results for your query. Google decides which pages should be displayed based on the rank of the website. This is why it is important to rank high in Google SERP for increasing your business.
Google PageRank in-depth:
The Google PageRank ranks web pages on a scale of 1 to 10 wherein 0 is the least, 10 being the highest & n/a being not yet ranked by Google. That’s what it is in a nutshell. The quality & quantity of links to a webpage determines a relative score of that page’s importance and authority on a scale of 0 to 10.
A handful of websites have a perfect score of 10. So, if your website consists of better PageRank, your website will appear on the first page of the search result.
Now, if you want to find out the Google PageRank of your website, it’s not possible as Google has stopped sharing the page ranks with the webmaster tool.
Many users were under the impression that getting backlinks was the only way to get better ranking in SERP, but there are many other factors too, unfortunately, they remain undisclosed by Google.
Remember: PageRank is an important ingredient in Google’s ranking algorithm.
Why is Google PageRank important?
When one page links to another page, it is effectively casting a vote for another page. A high PageRank doesn’t guarantee high rankings but it can significantly help. The better the PageRank, the more visibility of your website which means there are more chances of users entering your site and more organic traffic.
Factors affecting Google PageRank:
Google Page Ranking is given by Google to a particular website based on a few factors. Here are a few of them-
Therefore keeping in mind the above factors you can improve the overall ranking and performance of your website.
